Exciting news for all Rotax Karters on the African continent! The first annual African Open Championship is to go ahead at the thrilling Idube circuit, near Pietermaritzburg, on Monday 8th of August 2011.
You could not get a more important set of prizes for this one off event! The winner of the Junior Max, Senior Max, DD2 and DD2 Masters all get a coveted seat in their respective classes at the Rotax World Finals, in Al Ain, in the United Arab Emirates. No amount of money can buy these seats, and are only available to the winners of national series in over 50 countries, as well as European Champions, Asian Champions and now also the African Open Champions! There is also very exciting news that the winner and runner-up of the Maxterino 60cc Class as well as the winner of Mini Max will get an invitation to the Rotax Grand Festival to be held in Portugal in August, in either the Micro Max or Mini Max class depending on age! This new event is essentially a mini Rotax World Final, for the younger classes!
The event is open to all African drivers (including: South Africa, Kenya, Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Namibia, etc.), as well as one additional non-African country, that is still to be confirmed with their governing body. The event will be run on the Monday after the Idube round of the National Championship. It will be run in the format similar to the Rotax World Finals, where there is timed qualifying, qualifying heat/s, then a pre-final and a winner takes all Final! Please remember when making travel arrangements that the following day is a public holiday!
The following classes will be run on the day:
- Maxterino 60cc (Prize: Rotax Grand Festival invite, to winner and runner-up)
- Mini Max (Prize: Rotax Grand Festival invite to winner)
- Junior Max (Prize: Rotax World Final Invite to winner)
- Senior Max (Prize: Rotax World Final Invite to winner)

- 125GP (Prize: R5 000 to winner, R3 500 to 2nd place, R1 500 to 3rd, all in EMR Gift Vouchers)
All classes will be run to the existing SARMC rules. All competitors are most welcome to enter the national championship event the day before. This will be excellent practise, and testing for the foreign competitors. Of course non-South Africans will not be able to score points in the South African Championship. The circuit will be open for practise from Wednesday 3 August 2011.
Entries will be limited to 34 per class, on a first come first serve basis. It will be limited as follows: maximum of 17 South African Drivers, and 17 non-South African drivers per class. Once you have entered and paid full entry fee including organizer fuel and tyres, you will receive a confirmation that your entry has been accepted. If the entries are already full, you will be placed on a reserve list. Your entry may then be accepted later on if there are less non-South African entries, or alternatively less South African entries, to balance the total number of entries to 34 per class.
We look forward to seeing you all at the biggest and most exciting event on South African soil since the Rotax Grand Finals in 2003!
